Potency of Essential Oils

Essential oils are potent and concentrated, up to 50-70 times more so than herbs. A little goes a long way.

A lot of care should be taken throughout the growing and distilling process, as differences in weather, soil conditions, time of harvest, and many other factors affect the potency of the oils. In addition, oils grown from some areas of the world are much more potent than the same oils grown from other areas of the world.

Given their potency, safety precautions should be followed and consulting with someone skilled in their use is important. For example, citrus oils can cause skin irritation when applied topically and exposed to sun. Care must be taken when used with children and elderly folks and proper dosing and dilution used.
